Mommy & Me Self Defense is the division of Devi Protective Offense dedicated to Moms and the babies and toddlers who depend on them to be educators and protectors. Workshops are open to Moms, Dads, caregivers and depending on the location, children of all ages.
Mommy & Me Self Defense was created by 25 year veteran Martial Artist, Personal Trainer, Emergency Medical Technician and Mom, Teja Van Wicklen, who asks, "Are you really going to kick and punch while eight months pregnant or with a baby in one arm?"
Mommy & Me Workshops are 60% lecture, 40% physical technique. We will provide on site daycare depending on the venue so kids can participate during some sections and play during the lecture sections.
Most of us don’t have time to fit the study of something that may or might not happen into our ridiculously busy lives. One workshop can teach you to come up with your own solutions, to play out scenarios in your head and to see life like a chess game - to think 3 or 4 moves ahead. Thinking this way can actually de-clutter your mind.
Minds can be trained just like bodies. With exercise and repetition.
Training your mind to question itself and its methods, to examine its environment, requires practice.
This kind of mental training applies to every aspect of life, not just the bad stuff. You’ll begin to form mental tools you can use in daily interactions with people as well as during any emergency situation – floods, fires, storms, even flat tires.
Though they fit many purposes, these lessons focus primarily on how to keep yourself and your family off the criminal radar, with an emphasis on the specific issues that make Mom’s of infants and toddlers more vulnerable to violent crime.
Can so much be accomplished in just a day or two?
Keep in mind that the goal is not to become a lethal warrior but to become an UNACCEPTABLE TARGET and the master of your own life..
The program uses the most often seen types of attacks and issues common to busy, exhausted moms to work out the overwhelming problem of how to protect your family under the worst possible circumstances.
Our kids learn more from watching us than from anything we say. We need to be the role models we wanted as children. Self Defense has a bad rep for being either about death and dismemberment or kicking and punching. I propose a new way to see it.
Let's start with the term Self Defense.
I called this program Mommy & Me Self Defence because self defense is currently the accepted term. But when I think of the word defense I see someone holding her hands up and trying not to get hurt. I think self-defense is too weak a concept to encourage a powerful mental state. And mental state can be everything.
Protective Offense is the study of dealing with adversity, of high-speed problem solving, of projecting and reaching goals. It’s the study of disarming bad situations, of survival, perseverance and awareness, of dynamic rather than passive living.Preparing for life-threatening emergencies wakes up a part of our brain we rarely use, sharpens thought processes and prepares us for all manners of adversity.
The concepts it’s necessary to study in order to become fluent in the language of safety will make you more effective in any situation that requires you to make split second decisions with lasting ramifications.
The thing about violence is, it’s somehow a microcosm for everything we do. It’s so much a part of our world that understanding it clarifies human behavior.
A person who understands violence is at liberty to see it before it occurs and to make choices.
Understanding violence and being prepared for sudden emergencies will help remove some of the fear and apprehension from your life.
